Prologue. I never imagined myself to be the sociable type. I grew up in a kids home, but I was different. I was the only one who never left my parents, because they were the people who ran the place. I was of course never short of friends, but every kid who arrived was either too feisty, or just ignored me and was in one of the little groups. I was a loner. I'd avoid the everyone as much as possible. And I did that for seven years, until I met who I count as my first ever friend. I woke up one morning to see a kicking and screaming girl being dragged in. My dad had to throw her over his shoulder and carry her inside. Her name was Rey Jones, and she soon became known as Indiana Jones, because she was reckless as hell. The first day she arrived, she disappeared. After hours of searching, Juno MacKenzie found her up a tree, right at the top. It took quite a while to get her down. Rey made an instant attempt at being my friend, and when you're young it isn't hard to make friends just like that. A week later, the step-brother and sister, Ociee Wopshot and Indeever Silver, arrived. They were opposites. Indeever was always intent on academic success, whereas Ociee was a party animal. They were incredibly likeable. Our group stayed us four for a while, until one May when who looked to be an average quiet child arrived. His real name was Scooter McGreen, but he went by his middle name, Jackson. Nobody even really knows his real name any more, since in year three my parents helped him get it officially changed. He seemed like a pity case at first. He lost his entire family, his mum, dad and brother, as well as his unborn baby sister, on the way to the hospital in a car crash. He was lucky to make it out alive, but lost his right foot, and had to have a prosthetic. Everyone was intrigued at first, but soon lost interest. He soon made it clear he wasn't an average, sad child. One day, Tyler and Jason were trying to pick on him, when he took one swing and gave them both black eyes. He kept to himself for a long time. I wanted to be his friend for a while, but it was unlikely it would ever happen. That July, we were getting overrun. None of us had been fostered for a long time. At this stage, our household consisted of myself and my parents, Juno, Tyler, Jason, Red, Jackson, Ociee, Indeever, Rey, Nova and Atlas. We didn't expect any new arrivals. It was then that a terrified, thin child was dragged to the house. Unlike Rey's screaming fit, he wasn't making any effort to escape. He was just incredibly quiet. Lukas Adams was in fact, the biggest coward I'd ever met. Everyone and everything terrified him. I soon learned that he watched his mother die in front of him, in what my parents described as a terrible fit, and then suffered daily abuse from his father. He watched his younger sister die of hunger, and was found by the council shaking on the side of a road. It was Jackson who felt the most pity towards him. He approached him instantly. They both had a lot in common. Ociee and Indeever could relate also, as Ociee's dad often hit both of them. Even Rey sat with him and talked about how it felt to lose a mum. But me? I couldn't relate to him at all. I couldn't relate to a single one of my friends. They'd all gone through so much, and I lived a soft life. I almost thought about drifting away from my friends. They didn't need me. But maybe I needed them. I joined them again, and we blazed through Primary. But little did I know, secondary would hit us hard.
